You may also try adding a rootdelay parameter in the kernel parameters
list to make the system wait for a few seconds before attempting to
access the hard disk. rootdelay=(time in seconds, try 5). This of
course may not eliminate the root cause but it might allow the user to
access the system (and perhaps run an apt-get upgrade to grab the
newest kernel and initramfs)
