[ubuntu-in] how to play collated audio-clips from in-the-middle

dear all,
bewildered no software exists to do this,
and thankful if you point me to one:
1. take several mp3 files.
2. create a playlist that sequences audio-clips from within these mp3-files.
all existing music-player software create playlists of full audio-tracks.
i wish to play, for example:
[time in hh:mm:ss]
1. audiotrack9.mp3 00:54:35 - 00:59:59
2. audiotrack7.mp3 01:04:32 - 01:46:32
3. audiotrack9.mp3 00:35:20 - 00:45:32
. . .
i could use audacity to split and clip the source audiofiles into individual
audiofiles and lay 'em in a sequence as a regular playlist, but that's
inelegant,
and will soon clutter my hard-disk. especially since i need to do this
on an almost daily basis.
surprisingly, my creative zen can almost do this, through the concept of
'bookmarks' strung together in a playlist. sort of.
i've looked at DJ software, but they need someone to man them,
and all require me to switch on JACK, which is a real pain in the
cigarette-butt.
am sure am missing something obvious here,
thanks in advance for helping me see the wood from the trees.
regards
niyam
