Kind of oxymoronic, "use FOSS but not open standards" am wondering if
this event actually has a grasp of either FOSS or open standards.

It seems to me that Fossilize is just that an attempt to make FOSS a
niche area set of tools. FOSS is not inversely related to open
standards it fact it aims to be open standards.

Nitesh has a very valid point. Using proprietory outputs does not  set
a good example. Open Standards are supposed to be operatable by any OS
and if Wincedows or Crapple cannot open those files it is they who are
preventing open standards from being operational.

However that said many other groups that promote foss have a different
approach to distributing litt and av material in formats that are
acceptable to a larger non FOSS community and the simplest being to
allow two sets of files to co exist. Allowing people to explore what
FOSS options are available. Further a truly FOSS event would have
links to various FOSS tools that work on non FOSS environments.

The orginal invite certainly has very low expectations from its
invitees - in fact with such pre conditions one would think its meant
for hardeded fossilized Fossters
 To quote and comment variously

Another quote from the original invite "The event  aims to equip
students to be able to contribute to existing projects and guide them
to start their own projects."

I suppose such existing projects will be happy to take on people who
are in capable of finding a way to open an "open source , open
standard" set of files.

I am suprised that the website did not prominently say use IE , after
all that would make it much easier for a lot of folks.

Last, recently i was forced , by the IT dept, to use M$ Orifice 2010
(office for those whpo don't like puns) to do some tax return work.
Surprise Surprise it opens ODS files , i wonder why they want to open
open format files, must be something to do with many countries and
regions imposing "open standards"
