[ubuntu-in] Not able to add ttf fonts

Hi

Have been doing the following to add ttf fonts to my Ubuntu system

1. Copy fonts to /usr/share/fonts (in sudo mode)
2. run sudo fc-cache -fsv

and voila fonts are back.

Tried this on 9.04 and the ttf fonts don't show up.
Tried to move the fonts directly to /fonts instead of /fonts/fo_directory
Moved the fonts into one of the existing directories , this too does not work

So what am i missing
