I would recommend using the ppa packages instead. Add the following
lines to /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main deb-src
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main

Then, do:
  sudo aptitude update
  sudo aptitude install firefox-3.5

Be warned that this package is under active development, and seems
to generate 10+MB of updates every few days.
