I believe the upgrade process that ran earlier locked the archive or
package list directory.
Check if there exists any lock file in /var/cache/apt/archives or
/var/lib/apt/lists/. Delete the lock file, do 'sudo apt-get update'
again and then do 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade'.
