i am also facing a lot of problems with my nVidia GeForce 2 on-board
my asus motherboard, where i've recently installed ubntu 8.04. i only
get 800x600.
after a lot of trying, i found this resource:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?s=a09ddc7aad134bc3c5135ed43e4780f9&t=766846&page=2
it did solve my problem, but did not make the resolution persistent.
so i had to do some more fiddling, mentioned in the comments is
something about 'virtual' settings, which had to be the same. that
fixed the log-in screen resolution, which i've again pushed back to
800x600 as it screwed everything again at a higher resolution.
have also switched off my nvidia driver, disabled it, using
system>administration>hardware drivers, as it was causing a lot of
problems.
using ubuntu menu > others > screen and graphics, i am now on 1024 x 768.
i so want to get my nvidia graphics used properly, and try out beryl
and compiz. :-(
