Have you tried "aptitude"? its like synaptic for the console :-)

Just run "sudo aptitude" to get the UI, you might need to first sudo
apt-get install aptitude.

There (I think) is the "linux" metapackage which if you update will
get you the latest kernel and modules either from the main or proposed
repos depending on your apt sources.
