Looks like, there's some issue with the CD. Did you
perform an integrity check? (Check CD for defects) at
the boot?

It is easier to install using the GUI that comes with
the default Live-cum-installable CD.
Therefore, you have few options.
If have unlimited downloads at a reasonably good speed
(say 128 Kbps), you could download 7.04, perform the
necessary checks (Md5 etc.) and burn it to a CD-RW.
Alternatively, if you have ubuntu 6.06 it should
install without problems. Then, later you can do a dist-upgrade.
