Microsoft Outlook - >Evolution (you will evolve here better)
Messengers (Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, IRC) all in just GAIM (no need for multiple
messengers, but there is no video chat in Y! supported here, also not voice,
you can use skype for voice though)
GIMP is a photo editor and photo creator too, if you are not the artist, you
may find it difficult to straight draw a line :)
FTP Client, there are many, like gFTP, and also you can add Firefox
extension for FTP client and servers tooo.
There are many multimedia(audio video player), but for best experience
install VLC and beep-media-player along with the system default totem and
Rythmbox. Also, you will have to install seperated required plugins, so u
need internet connection working on your installed Ubuntu. gstreamer is the
engine for all sort of audio and vids. so search for gstreamer plugins in
the package manager (synaptics)

Good luck
