The clock synchronising process requires an Internet connection so that
it can sync the system clock with the various time servers around the
world. If you don't have Internet, then this process will keep trying
and will time out eventually. You can stop the process at the beginning
itself by pressing Ctrl+C and it will then boot up just fine.

No, this has nothing to do with your processor. AMD Athlon is just as
good as (if not better than) and Intel processor.

To solve this problem permanently, do this when you have successfully
booted into the system --
$ sudo update-rc.d -f ntpdate remove
This will remove the clock syncing process from the boot-up scripts and
you'll be fine.
