Just my 2 cents worth.
I am most definitely in favour of maintaining our monthly IRC meeting.
I believe having a scheduled IRC meeting affords all members of the LoCo
the opportunity to attend and participate (granted most don't, but they
could if they wanted to!). The mailing list certainly has its place but
I don't think that using it for decision making is the best way to
agree on something. It can take days or weeks to agree on an item and
with that most members still do not participate in the discussion.
Items discussed at meetings takes minutes to decide upon in comparison
(granted many minutes in some cases). The Ubuntu Hours are regional
and as such not a great place make decisions which affect the Irish
LoCo. I know our LoCo is structured in a very relaxed fashion but I
still believe that IRC meetings are the most efficient way of making
decisions and they do allow members from all areas of Ireland to
participate should they so desire.
For me the mailing list is way to slow for decision making and Ubuntu
Hours are just not suitable due to their regional basis.
I do agree that the current meeting time is not working and if dinners
are an issue I suggest we move it to a later time. I'd also be happy
with a weekend meeting or a meeting on any day of the week for that
matter. I do think that the regularly scheduled meeting is better
that unscheduled, sporadically called, meetings as scheduled meetings
are easier to remember and again they afford the greatest opportunity
for members to participate.
With one exception, I also agree that the agenda items for Septs
meeting were not of huge significance. I think that the item
discussing the release party was important. The whole point in
organising the party earlier was so that we could promote it better in
the hope that we might get a better turn to it. Many of the events
this year have been organised quite late leaving little time for
promotion.
I agree that we need increased activity in the LoCo. We need more
people thinking about what we need to be doing as a LoCo and adding
their items to the monthly agenda. I think getting
rid of the monthly meeting, or even getting rid of the monthly
schedule, would just facilitate our LoCos further demise.
Regards,
Mike
