64 bit Ubuntu & printers

I'm having a problem getting Ubuntu (9.10) to communicate with a
printer, a HP Photosmart 7960. The problem appears to be that Ubuntu is
64 bit, but despite trying several possible solutions found through
google/usenet/etc, I've had no luck. Has anyone else had this problem,
and managed to resolve it?
