64 bit Ubuntu & printers

Yes, using HPLIP. It worked with a previous 32 bitmachine, but no
longer. 

HPLIP sometimes reports that the printer is not attached/powered up,
sometimes just shows a print job as pending for hours without doing
anything.

I'm not sure if the problem is HPLIP or comms with the printer. It
appears to show up fine with lsusb, and that's about the height of my
technical prowess. I am that rare creature in the linux world, the end
user.
