a mi punto de vista MySql es la mejor opcion por muchas cosas.

Planificacion de la base de datos (INNDB, MyISAM,etc.).
configuracion segun necesidades (el limite es tu hardware)
amplio soporte y herramientas
programacion dentro de la base (procecdimientos, trigger en las versiones
mas nuevas)
compatibilidad con todas las tecnologias de desarrollo

la verdad es que de las bases free, esta es mi favorita.
