Cannot install linux on my HP Probook 4510S

Dear friends,
thank you very much for your great support on this problem.
Alexi, I tried to install the _alternate Ubuntu_ edition through the
link you provided.
The installation went through just fine up until the disk partitioning
stage, but the "_Installing the base system_"step was unable to
complete. I kept getting all sorts of "error", "file corrupt" and
"cannot retrieve file" messages. I started all over again many times
until I had to abort this step. The following installation steps were
unable to begin, since base system had not been installed.
When I booted my laptop once more I got the message "_Non system disk or
disk error. Enter a disc and press enter when you are ready"_ etc. This
is (I think) because I had asked for the Ubuntu installation to use the_
entire disk_, so windows vista were gone, luckily :)
Then I thought I would try the Ubuntu 7.10 edition cd again, thinking
that maybe at this stage it would work. Unfortunately, once more
installation was aborted without any messages. The computer just stopped
right after a few minutes and went blank. I tried all the different boot
parameters Nikos suggested, to no avail.
Then I thought, why don't I try_ Open Suse _once more? :) Maybe, _this_
one will work.
And, it did!! So, after 3 days and 4 nights of struggling, I have Open
Suse on my laptop -unfortunately not Ubuntu- but yet again Linux :)
Alexi, Niko, Stergio, Argiri kai Savva sas efharisto poly, THANK YOU
VERY MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
By the way, Argiri, I had tried installing with both the laptop battery
on and off :)
All the best to all of you!!
Counting on you,
Maria
