RelPlayer 11Gold ubuntu 8.04 problem playing .avi files

I am new in Linux. I have Ubuntu 8.04.(Greek). i have download and successful
install real player but i can't make it play avi files. The message i am
receiving when i am trying to play avi is "Component missing" "The following
components are required : avi" and when i press the button "Check for
updates" the browser goes to the realplayer11 download page and i don't know
what to do. Thank you and if any one can help me i am waiting for
instructions. Sorry for my English...
