I'm also unable to reproduce it. I don't have Gnome installed (so I can't use
gedit), but I do have gucharmap installed, and it doesn't crash.

I have no idea why this crash could occur. The glyphs in version 2.3 have no
hints, they are just references to iota/upsilon and dieresistonos, the only
thing I can think of is that dieresistonos is also made with references to
dieresis and tonos (but it's the same in Serif and Mono and there are no
problems in those faces). I can only see one difference with Serif and Mono:
dieresistonos is hinted in Sans.

I quickly unreferenced dieresistonos: it's available at
http://fenix.cmi.ua.ac.be/~p015259/dejavu/ so if you would like to test it.

I would also like to know if also Sans Bold and Oblique (Italic) are affected.

Some info about installed packages on my system: (Gentoo, note that I haven't
updated most packages for 1 or 2 months)

gtk+ 2.6.10-r1
glib 2.6.5
pango 1.8.1-r1
fontconfig 2.2.3
cairo 1.0.2

Greetings,
Ben
