Thank you for your feedback. I will keep my reply very brief.
I run a cheap ~$5 virtual private server for my website. It has 512 MB
RAM and it runs 64-bit Ubuntu. My understanding is that 64-bit Ubuntu
is actually far more popular than 32-bit Ubuntu for these low-memory
servers.
Ubuntu GNOME has never supported or targeted low-RAM 10-year old
computers. Check out our 14.04 LTS Release Notes which recommended a
minimum of 1.5GB RAM (which is enough to run Ubuntu GNOME 64-bit but I
wouldn't open a lot of tabs in my web browser there).
