the ubuntu gnome team has always been a part of ubuntu desktop and with ubuntu 17.10, the default desktop will be gnome going forward. all the details can be read at www.ubuntu.com under the insights tab. 

the ubuntu gnome flavor is just being absorbed into the overall development of ubuntu and if my memory serves me correctly, ubuntu will now be called ubuntu gnome. 

ubuntu gnome is here to stay and so are the people behind the official flavor.
