With virtualization you can do many testing installations without
rebooting your production system.

What I can do with Ubuntu 14.04:

# Install Qemu
sudo apt-get install qemu qemu-kvm

# Create a 20GiB virtual hard disk
qemu-img create -f raw MyDisk1.img 20G

# Boot Ubuntu ISO as a CD-ROM to install in this image (RAM 2GiB)

qemu-system-x86_64 -cpu host -vga qxl -m 2048 -net nic, model=virtio -net
user -sdl -enable-kvm -boot d -drive file=ubuntu.iso,media=cdrom,index=0
-drive file=MyDisk1.img,media=disk,index=1

# Next boot without DVD/ISO:

qemu-system-x86_64 -cpu host -vga qxl -m 2048 -net nic, model=virtio -net
user -sdl -enable-kvm -boot c -drive file=MyDisk1.img,media=disk,index=0
