Thoughts on IPBlock (IPList) and similar

Anyone using this software? I used it before, but it seems to be
severely outdated. The only other alternative I found is PeerGuardian,
which I have tried and did not like.

On Windows I was using PeerBlock and I like it, because it provides
efficient blocking of pests such as the US GOV.

What are your thoughts? Is such software even needed on Linux?
