Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 and suspend/resume

I haven't tried 15.04 but I know from previous distros I've used that
suspend gives the behaviour you describe with nvidia hardware and the open
source nvidia drivers.   You need to have the proprietary ones for it to
work.  Could that be the issue here?
