Apps take longer to load from dash than from terminal (gnome shell 3.10)

When I load Chromium from the dash, the browser takes about 7-8 seconds to
load (and the busy symbol still spins in the top bar though Chromium is
usable at that point.)

If I run 'chromium-browser' from the terminal, it loads (almost) instantly.
This behavior is similar for other applications as well.

What exactly is going on in the dash? Has anybody else noticed this? I just
installed Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 on a low-spec laptop (Acer Aspire E-731, Intel
Celeron 1.9ghz processor) but it's clearly able to load Chromium quickly
one way. I have also installed the 'preload' daemon. I thought that maybe
the launcher in the dash is running chromium-browser with flags that are
slowing it down, but I can't figure out (from google) how to see what is
being executed. Any tips? Sorry if this has been asked before...

Cheers,
 Scott
