I like the idea since GNOME explicitly allows modifying the color or
background of their logo. They've objected to more aggressive merging
of logos such as the historical Debian GNOME team logo:

Compare with what they use now: http://pkg-gnome.alioth.debian.org/

Using Ubuntu orange does make it fairly obvious that we're Ubuntu.
Since black is a generic color, a black circle with the GNOME logo may
not be unique enough for people to instantly recognize who the logo
belongs to.

I think we should not include the TM and R symbols unless we are
specifically asked to include them. Even then I think there is good
reason not to include them. We can put some sort of disclaimer on the
website that Ubuntu and GNOME are trademarks of their respective
organizations.

Anyway, I'm not a design guy and I'm happy to see us use whatever you
all decide on. For 13.04, we are past UI Freeze and Final Freeze is
less than a week away so we may not be able to incorporate the logo
into this release. The logo doesn't have to be final this month; it
can be tweaked and redesigned over time.

I guess a logo is the final thing we're missing to be included in
Distrowatch for those who care about that.
