problema con particiones

hola a todos
es te es mi primer mensaje a esta lista aunque llevo un tiempo siguiendo
todo lo que se escribe por aquí-
instale hace ya un tiempo ubuntu 6.10 en una laptop en la que ya tenia
windows xp, las características de la maquina son:
HP Compaq nx6110
Intel(R) Celeron(R) M processor 1.40GHz
512mb de ram
disco duro: 60 GB IDE ATA
Modem: Agere Systems AC'97 Modem
el proceso de instalación ocurrió sin problemas, xp y ubuntu juntos,
despues trate de redimensionar el disco duro y asignarles unos gb de mas
a ubuntu y comenzó el desastre, primero lo quise hacer por el xp con el
particion magic y me da error por que el no fue el que creo las
particiones ext3, no me deja tampoco tocar la ntfs de windows,se cierra
sin mas y solo me da la información de la tabla de particiones:

por ubuntu el gparted me dice que tengo los 60 gb del disco duro sin
asignar sin ningún otro dato,no se que hacer , tengo en mis manos ubuntu
8.10 y quisiera instalarlo,pero como? me borraría todo el disco y no
puedo liberarme de windows todabia por que el módem en ubuntu tampoco me
funciona pero ya ese es otro tema que me da bastantes dolores de cabeza
y tampoco le he podido encontrar solución, pero prefiero dejarlo para
mas adelante y que por ahora si alguien puede me ayude con esto de las
particiones, estoy consciente que el error fue mio al crear la tabla de
particiones pero entiéndase que soy novato en esto.
por favor les pido encarecidamente si pueden ayudarme con esto háganlo
por aquí y no me den vínculos a seguir en la red que no dispongo de
acceso pleno a internet, mi acceso solo es a una red local.
