I have been running arch for a while now but I think you should try
getting frequtils (fixed the problem for me). Does anybody know if
it's installed with Ubuntu by default? Anyway I second the idea of
going with xfce too. <br>

For the battery I think you should try powertop. It gives you
exactly what is eating away at your watts so you can fix it.<br>
