My unscientific impression is that Dells are generally crappy :) sony's are good looking but proprietary boxes. I would really look into Toshiba, HP and Lenovo. See what's on the market, that's in your budget. Once you have some models google for compatibility (people screaming ..etc)

"I HEAR" that Dells are awesome with Ubuntu, some models even come with Ubuntu pre-installed.

I use toshiba satellite a500, i5, nvidia, 4gb rams for heave development. Compatiablity is awsome including the multimedia keys out of the box. Nothing is not working :) bluetooth, wifi, nvidia driver, camera....etc
