the system version doesn't matter much, if the problem is in the RAM then
you wont be able to run a live cd/usb session, but you said your start up
check passed that and complained about not being able to read the hard
disk, so if the problem is only in the hard disk then you 'should'
theoretically be able to run a live cd/usb session, but you wont be able to
use the hard disk, so you wont be able to install Ubuntu or read your files.
Like i said before, i would like you to double check that hard disk
connection and make sure that your system can see the hard disk, you could
check that from the bios for example, check the connected hardware and make
sure that you computer can see a hard disk connected to it.
