[ec2-beta] Instances show no console output, do not respond?

Hi all,

I've made 3 instances and none have shown any console output even
though they say "running" in ec2-describe-instances

I can not ssh or get the server to respond to ssh ether.

Is this a common problem? I've waited 30 minutes to see any output and
tried sending a restart command to no avail.

I dont want to be paying for an instance that has no console output
and is unusable.
