It should work on 16.04 LTS. It was extensively tested there. In fact, it's been available in the archives and working
(see below) since at least 14.04. We had the entire Unity 8 development team dogfood Unity 8 on 16.04 for at least a
day a couple of weeks ago, as a test.
There are two caveats, of course:
(1) The proprietary binary-blob video drivers from nVidia and AMD still do not yet support Mir, so you need to use free
software drivers. Not all the video drivers in VMs support Mir either, so it may not work in all VMs.
(2) You need to have the Stable Phone Overlay PPA in your sources to get the latest bugfixes and changes if you want to
see a preview of what should appear in 16.10 (it matches exactly the versions on the phone and in the archives for
16.10, but built for 16.04). It should still work without that PPA, but be missing a whole lot of functionality that's
scheduled to appear in 16.10.
