I have always believed that this is the number one reason why people 
contribute or not to a project placed online. At least documentation is 
how most communication really takes place.

So the formula for me has been making process documentation simple a 
priority over other kind of work, as this is what allows others to help 
me in the end.

The keys are making it understandable by anybody, visual and broken into 
several wiki pages. It takes longer to produce but it becomes a passive 
source of contributors. The work is made itself.
