Hi again! :)
The straight-forwards answer is that you don't need a new hard-drive!! or
at least it's extremely unlikely to be that severe a problem!
A few questions to try to figure out what resources you have that can help
fix it ...
1. How did you install the 1404? Did you use a Dvd or Usb stick?
2. Do you have a cd/dvd or usb-stick of the 12.04 that is easy to find?
3. do you have access to another computer? If so what is it running?
Windows, Mac, Android or what?
4. do you have a Cd/dvd or usb of any other distro such as Mageia, Fedora,
openSuSE, Redhat, CentOS, LinuxMint any other one?
My first thought is to boot-up a "LiveCd"/dvd or Usb of anything to "try
without installing" so that you can have a look at what's on your
hard-drive and see if everything is still there. Chances are very high
that everything IS still there but just hiding a bit.

If you don't already have a Dvd/Cd or usb-stick of 14.04 or 12.04 then we
can help you make one by using the community documentation page i just gave
a link to.

Tom :)
