Hello,

The hp printer model LASERJET PRO P1102w fails to install in Ubuntu 10.04
and other linux distributions. Apparently, the printer is configured to
appear to be a CD drive when the USB cable is plugged in to your computer.
(The purpose is so that you can install the printer on windows computers
without a cd and without downloading a file; just plug in the printer and
install.) However, this causes the printer installation software from
http://hplipopensource.com for the P1102w to fail on linux--the software
never detects the printer (because your linux computer is instead detecting
a cd drive), so it is impossible to install the printer.

To solve the problem, connect the printer to a windows computer, insert the
cd that came with the printer, and run the program SIUtility.exe or
SIUtility64.exe in the UTIL folder, then disable the "HP Smart Install"
feature for the printer. Then you can install the printer on Ubuntu or
other linux machines using the software from http://hplipopensource.com.

This bug has been discussed elsewhere, for instance here
https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/194406
and it would be helpful to the linux community if the solution was
disseminated.

Thank you
