Thanks for both your suggestions. Of course you are right about the
subject: mobi and ePub formats are both supported by Kindle and other
readers. I'll get both of them and try the methods. Everything I've
tried so far can't handle a hierarchy of tex files and outputs useless
formatted stuff.
As the ones you suggested are in perl and ruby, it should be possible to
hack either to work with the manual hierarchy. I've not used perl or
ruby so far, but they look fairly straightforward to me, so I'm willing
to try to learn.
