IRC Chat links

I was in the Ubuntu Week class for Ubuntu One, and began wondering if
the help system might benefit from having webchat.freenode.net links
embedded in the help files for various applications. In other words,
OpenOffice.org  help in English might have a link directly to the
#openoffice-en channel where users could get help. No IRC client is
necessary. Other applications would provide links to their IRC
channels, and Ubuntu could decide whether to use the generic app
channel or have an Ubuntu-specific channel for that application?

I'd be willing to do the work on this if the group thinks it's a good idea.
