Q) Is platform & OS the interchangeable terms?

 Hello,
 I just began to teach myself Linux.
 I need to figure out what platform I'm using in order to install a
software.
 Are OS and platform interchangeable terms?
 I just installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS for dual-booting, but I wonder if I can
download the program for CentOS 4 x86_6.
 Any help would be appreciated.
