So here's my attempt at creating expanding lists for the top level links.
I'm not sure this is exactly what you where thinking, but hopefully it's a
start.  I borrowed most of the code from:
http://www.mattkruse.com/javascript/mktree/documentation.html

You'll need to change the urls to the gifs in
ubuntu-doc_tree/index_files/maketree.css for the images to show up.

I guess just let me know what you think.  I'm very interested in helping to
improve the site.
