Thanks again for your work on this. The output look is now pretty much
perfect I think. The alignment works very well on firefox.

However, I still preferred the simplicity of the usage
<<Hint(message)>> over <<Alert(Hint: message)>>. It would allow for
fewer mistakes by authors and I really don't think it's necessary to
let authors experiment with new alert types: we've learnt that it's
important to keep things simple so that there is a better chance of
contributors using tools in a consistent way.

Do you feel strongly about this point?

One other point: I've noticed that the newer implementation of the
macro breaks if the user is logged out: let me know if you can't
reproduce that and I'll send you the traceback. The problem wasn't
present with the older implementation.
