To be honest I think that's a vastly better option. Students move at
different paces and I'm concerned that a common branch for the group
would lead to a lot of messy changes overlapping with each other.

Although pushing to Launchpad is currently quite heavy, I don't think
it will be long before server-side shared repositories are supported,
so that will drastically reduce upload time.

That doesn't mean that it would never be possible to have smaller
branches owned by the student group for students to collaborate on
specific documents, though.
