Hello,
My name is David Mawdsley. I'm applying to be part of the mentoring programme, to be useful in document writing of some sort. I have some time, though not a lot, that I can give to this mentoring programme. Most of my workdays are filled with customer visits, repairs, installations, etc.
I regularly maintain webpages with HTML that occasionally have JavaScript routines, though I don't consider myself a programmer. I maintain five active websites.
As a sole proprietor, I've run my company, MadMod Computing, for almost 7 years--fixing Windows PC's, fixing and securing networks, and giving instruction for individuals and small businesses. I do very little work with servers. Before retiring to run my company, I was a public high school mathematics teacher for 37 years.
My certifications with CompTIA are A+, Network+ and Security+.
In my lab are 3 notebooks running Windows XP Home, Windows ME and a new Dell E1505n running Ubuntu 7.04. I also have an old white-box tower now running Ubuntu 7.04 upgraded from an earlier Ubuntu 6.10 install. Either the Windows ME or the Dell E1505n computer travels with me on customer visits depending upon the customer need. The other computers stay in my lab.
I'm experienced with Windows and many software packages, but I'm mostly a half-year newbie with Ubuntu--staying mostly away from command-line methods unless I have to. My computers are all running successfully at present with the software installed that I need. The Ubuntu computers I use are basically trouble-free. The tower does AIDS research in a distributed computing environment--working in the background while I do other things on the computer.
The Ubuntu computers are gradually taking on more and more of my business environment. (At present, I have no plans to work with or include Windows Vista in any of my work and have told my customers that I don't support Windows Vista--at least until SP1 comes out.) I may soon have a customer who wants to try out Ubuntu.
Let me know if I fit in with your requirements in a useful way.
Best regards,
Dave
