Presuming you're using ubuntu or similar.

apt-get install xchat

start xchat, connect to freenode (it should be on your server list) once
you're connected, type /j #channelname

sorry, jumped in mid discussion not sure what chanel you're meeting at, but
/j #ubuntu  would join the ubuntu channel.
