Ekiga documentation reworked.

Hi,

Alan Pope changed a sentence of presentation :
"Ekiga is not compatible with Skype or Google Talk due to the
proprietary nature of those applications."

First, thank you Alan to take care of the correctness :)

The problem of interoperability between Ekiga and Google talk is about
protocol (like with Skype). But Google Talk is based on a RFC (xmpp) for
authentication, presence, and messaging. Google Talk uses extensions to
XMPP for voice signaling and peer-to-peer communication (the VoIP part,
called Jingle). These extensions are in the process of being reviewed by
the XMPP standards body as official enhancements (known as XEPs) to the
standard. See http://www.xmpp.org/xsf/press/2005-12-15.shtml. In
addition, Google talk plan to add the SIP protocol to their client, see
http://code.google.com/apis/talk/open_communications.html#protocols

In summary, we will have VoIP interoperability between any SIP client
and Google Talk one day. (I personnaly will try to have it right now
using FreeSwitch http://www.freeswitch.org/ to connect Ekiga and Google
Talk). At the moment, XMPP is a IETF standard for Instant messaging and
Presence, while SIP is a IETF standard for VoIP.

The instant messaging and presence part of SIP (called SIMPLE which will
be part of Ekiga 3.0) is also in the process of being reviewed by the
IETF to become a standard. see
http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/simple-charter.html

The issue with Skype is different: their protocol is proprietary. Skype
do not want to make their protocol a standard. The only way to have
compatibility with Skype is reverse-engineering.

For those reasons, I will change the sentence like this :
Ekiga is not compatible with Skype due to the proprietary nature of this
application nor Google Talk as it doesn't implement the SIP protocol
yet.

Or something like that. (or even more simple...). Feel free to comment.

Regards,
Yannick

PS: XMPP and SIP try to cover the same domains as standards: Instant
Messaging and VoIP. Unfortunately, this add confusion to the already
complex worlds of IM and VoIP...
