To be honest, the width looks fine to me, but I'd have to defer to the
web professionals as to what too wide would be for most people.

I'm of the opinion that most people, especially new users, will be very
familiar with the version numbers. I'm seeing them all over the place
now. A few months ago it was a different situation. And after all, [1]
already uses the version number scheme.
