plugins

Hello,

I'm an absolute novice to ubuntu and linux. I'm trying to download and
play mp3 files. The download works, but when I click on 'open', I get
the following message:

Totem could not play
file:////home/joseph/Desktop/01_Birthday_-_White_Album_[CD2]_-_The_Beatles.mp3'.
There were no decoders found to handle the stream, you might need to
install the corresponding plugins.

Can you help me get the plugins? I assume I could solve this kind of
problem myself, if I just knew where to start. I received a similar
message when trying to install the Opera web browser.
