Right, that's why I said "a spec probably would be counter-productive.
I suggest we instead work towards making the changes obviously the
right thing to do." :-)

Obsolete doesn't only mean out of date; it can also mean redundant or
no longer required. We can make the latter two true even if the former
is not.
