This is true. However I think the ugliness of having an icon for the
external link outweighs this usability point myself.

For example the first list here is very ugly:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community

I have looked through some of the other themes for moin and several of
them do not include an icon for external links. And if you think about
it, most websites do not dress up external links either, so we wouldn't
be breaking anything.

So I think it would be worth removing the icon completely.
