Summary: faqguide gives wrong advice for changing boot services
Product: Documentation
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: FAQ Guide
AssignedTo: debzilla at ubuntu.com
ReportedBy: mdke at ubuntu.com

Just filing this so that I don't forget it.
I noticed that the faqguide advises users to chmod -x /etc/init.d/ntpdate in
order to prevent that boot script from taking a lot of time on computers without
a permanent net connection. This advice is wrong and goes against debian policy
advice on how to organise init scripts as described
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-opersys.html#s-sysvinit.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuBootupHowto also falls into this error.
The best way to organise init scripts is to use rcconf, update-rc.d or even
better, use the two graphical tools available: boot manager from
gnome-system-tools, or "bum" (universe) which is a graphical tool to edit init
scripts. The former is simpler, the latter more comprehensive.
