OpenSSL 4 in Ubuntu 26.10

Hello ubuntu-devel,

I am targeting OpenSSL 4 for Ubuntu 26.10 Stonking Stingray Release.
This major version introduces an ABI break. There is a transition
tracker set up: https://transitions.ubuntu.com/html/openssl4.html.

We need everyone's eyes on the FTBFS (Fails To Build From Source)
errors: https://launchpad.net/~openssl-testing/+archive/ubuntu/openssl4-rebuild/+packages

Graham Inggs (ginggs) has filed bugs on launchpad for FTBFS with the
tag openssl-4.0:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.tag=openssl-4.0
Please assign yourself to the bugs if you plan to work on them.

You will most likely encounter build errors due to removed deprecated
symbols and certain structures being made opaque. You can see the full
changelog here:
https://github.com/openssl/openssl/releases/tag/openssl-4.0.0

If the package cannot be fixed easily, reach out on Matrix (#devel:ubuntu.com).

You can use the following PPA to test the build against OpenSSL 4.
sbuild -d stonking --extra-repository="deb [trusted=yes]
http://ppa.launchpad.net/openssl-testing/openssl4-fixes/ubuntu
stonking main" .

I have attached a test rebuild report to this email, generated using
https://github.com/vhaudiquet/lp-ftbfs-report

I am currently working through dependency level 2 on the transition
tracker. The plan is to get the FTBFS list small enough to upload
OpenSSL 4 to the Stonking archive before the Feature Freeze (August
20, 2026).
