One of the side benefits of the Nexus 7 project is indeed to provide
pressure to reduce the footprint of the desktop as a whole.

https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desktop-r-reduced-power-ram
already includes work items for converting several services from Python
to (probably, as I understand it) Vala. There are several distinct
pieces of work there and they're fairly disjoint, so I'm sure that an
attempt to pick up one of them would be welcomed.

[moderator hat] Constructive criticism is welcome, but the tone of this
message is over the line.
http://www.ubuntu.com/project/about-ubuntu/conduct applies on this
mailing list, as on all other Ubuntu lists. Repeated comments with this
tone are likely to attract a ban.
